The initial phase of Mount Baker Rim’s (MBR’s) Security Surveillance and Access Control Project (SSAC) is complete: the non-electronic hardware at the Front Gate has been replaced and a new raceway (buried cable pull-through) has been installed underground between the Front Gate island and the Office. Apart from finding an unanticipated concrete sidewalk under the old asphalt driveway, closing the Front Gate and relaying traffic to the Fire Gate proceeded without a hitch. A big shout out to Hannah, Ken, Thor, and Laura for the excellent signage pointing the way.
The very cold air, coupled with having to wait for hardware deliveries, has slowed some of the work down.
Tentative Schedule
Week of February 10 - 14
Copy over of existing MBR card system database into Feenics / Acre system, which is what supports the new system.
New access control panels installed at Gatehouse and Clubhouse.
Installation of video controllers in Gatehouse and Clubhouse for cameras.
New camera and license plate readers installed in Gate House and Clubhouse (some work might slip to following week).
Week of February 17 – 21
Cameras installed in Recycling Center.
Gate installed at Recycling Center.
Stress test of all camera systems.
Sort out communications between Clubhouse and Recycling Area.
Week of February 24 –>
New system is turned on (disconnected from gates, doors) to test functionality, access control, cloud access, etc.
Communications sent to Membership regarding switching access controls from old proximity cards to new smart cards, how to, and schedules.
N.B. The Front Gate should not need to be closed for additional work. Once we have worked through some remaining open items, I will send out an email outlining how access and getting new smart cards will work going forward.
Important to note: to make the transition easier on people, especially for those for whom it’s a schlep to come to Glacier to retrieve a new smart card, regardless of how many physical cards that members have permission to possess, we are going to automatically issue a mobile phone-based App/token/credential to every member, along with detailed instructions on how to use. This app will sit on your phone and will give you capability to open the Front Gate and other facilities as allowed by activating the App and pushing a button to open the gate/door. Once the App is installed, the phone does not need internet access to work. Depending on the device, it will use the phone’s Bluetooth or Near Field Communication (NFC) to communicate with the Card Reader, similarly to Google or Apple Pay.
Details of the new system, including Privacy Policies, data retention policies, etc. will be provided.
For folks who want a more in-depth overview of security tokens in their use, I recommend the following for a shallow dive: Security token - Wikipedia
